Once you've settled for a favorite, you can modify it with optics, suppressors, fore grips, reticles, barrels, frames, stocks and more, all of which will affect the performance of your weapon.

There are also purely aesthetic enhancements - why not go for the drug lord look with polished walnut grips for your nine? The game does give you a few breadcrumbs to help you get a bit more invested, but I do wish that they could have given us a proper story to enjoy.

There are plenty of difficulty levels and the higher the difficulty level the more you are rewarded so there is a lot of incentive to replay heists on higher difficulty levels. One of the things that I really like about Payday 2 is how there are many different kinds of heists for you to do. You can rob a bank, an armored car, a store and even make and sell drugs!

There is a nice amount of variety and I know in my case, I never ended up having to two do heists that were exactly the same back to back. You can go around and try and complete your heist with stealth. This is very challenging to do, but you feel amazing when you do it, plus you are rewarded for it very handsomely.

You can also go in all guns blazing and just hope that you have more firepower and are a better shot than the cops and security officers trying to stop you. On lower difficulty levels players in custody will eventually come out of custody after a set time period, but otherwise, their teammates must take a hostage to trade to get them back into the game.

A job is failed if all players are downed or in custody but some jobs have unique failure conditions, such as the stealth only heist, Shadow Raid. At the end of each heist, the player is presented with a screen with three cards, one of which is to be chosen by the player called a "Payday". These bonus cards can be either weapon modifications, masks, colors or materials for masks, bonus experience or money.

Players can purchase and customize masks, although these are purely cosmetic and have no effect on the gameplay.

Throughout the game, players accumulate money and experience. The money is divided into two parts. As players earn experience points, their reputation level increases. When a player's level increases they earn skill points, allowing them to buy abilities and bonuses from skill trees representing five criminal archetypes and playstyles. It is not possible to max out every single tree and players are often encouraged to mix and match skills from each tree to maximize usefulness.

Players also receive "perk points," in proportion to their experience earned, that can be used to unlock additional bonuses from 17 "perk decks.
